PORTABLE RESPIRATOR (FIRST). The first portable respirator, believed at the time to be the first of its kind in use in northeast Iowa, was introduced to physicians in 1959 when it was brought here in an emergency for a patient suffering a lung condition.

Impressed by the device, a similar machine was purchased by the three hospital administrations, the three hospitals' staffs of physicians, the Dubuque Medical Society, the Oxus Grotto, and several individuals in 1960. It was readily movable but could not be used outside a hospital. The machine was initially located at FINLEY HOSPITAL (THE).
