PEABODY, William H.
PEABODY, William H. (Syracuse, NY, 1823--Dubuque, IA, July 1, 1906). Peabody established the first wholesale and jobbing trade in Toledo, Ohio, before moving to Dubuque in 1856. (1) He reestablished himself in the mercantile business and expanded into a profitable liquor trade that he maintained for eighteen years with the W. H. PEABODY AND COMPANY.
Peabody was also the owner of the building in which the SCHROEDER-KLEINE GROCER COMPANY operated on Main and 4th STREETS. When that company relocated in 1894 to Main and Jones, Peabody announced he would demolish the old building and construct a new one "with all modern conveniences." (2)
Peabody's home at 1428 Locust was used from 1906 until 1960 as a rectory for ST. JOHN'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH. In 1962 it was considered as a site for a city museum, but two years later the home, a fine example of SECOND EMPIRE ARCHITECTURE, was torn down for parking space.
