PANTO, Anthony M.
PANTO, Anthony M. (Dec. 5, 1923, Palermo, Italy--Dubuque, IA, Sept. 14, 2011). Vice-president, Operational Services-AMERICAN TRUST AND SAVINGS BANK. In 1991 Panto completed thirty-two years of employment with American Trust.
During WORLD WAR II, Panto served in the Italian army until captured by the American Fifth Army under General George Patton. After the armistice, Panto joined the American army as a doctor's aide. He later served with the English 8th Army and received a commendation from Field Marshall Montgomery before being dispatched to assist Polish forces. After the war, Panto rejoined the Italian army and served with its Alpine troops. He moved to Dubuque in 1951.
He served several terms as president of the Key City Coin Club, with which he became associated in 1958 and was president of the Dubuque Bowling Association. He coached the American Trust's women's softball team and the men's basketball team. He was also affiliated with MARIO'S ITALIAN RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE for thirty years and created the Sicilian Salad which proved to be a best seller.
