OEHRLE, John
OEHRLE, John. (Dyersville, IA, Feb. 27, 1929--Palm Springs, CA, Jan. 15, 2017) The son of Lawrence H. and Henrietta (Goerdt) Oehrle, John graduated with a Master of Arts from the University of Iowa in 1958. He served in the United States Army from October 1952 to August 1954, and played his trumpet in the 9th Army Band while stationed in Alaska. John married Evelyn Barker on September 16, 1954, in Iowa City, Iowa. They raised their three children, until Evelyn passed away on November 13, 1991.
John was the band director at WAHLERT CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL from 1959 to 1969. He then became the band director at STEPHEN HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL from its opening in 1969 until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of the Iowa Bandmasters Association, the National Education Association, and the American Legion in Palm Springs.
