OBERFOELL, Richard J. (Dubuque, IA, July 25, 1968--Iowa City, IA, Feb. 5, 2015) The son of Albert M. Oberfoell and Carol M. (Timmerman) Oberfoell, Richard graduated from WAHLERT CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL and LORAS COLLEGE. He earned an M.A. in learning and teaching from DePaul University in Chicago and an M.A. in school administration from the University of Iowa, where he had also earned his ESL certification. During college, he studied abroad at the University of Madrid, Spain. After college he spent six months in Mexico, learning its culture and language, and then volunteered for a year teaching inner-city children at Amate House in Chicago.

Richard had an international teaching career: five years in Valencia, Venezuela, and three years in Chinhae, South Korea where he first met and then married SunHee Cho on March 30, 2003. They settled in Iowa City, and he began teaching at West Liberty's Middle School, a dual language school in Spanish and English.
