NEUWOEHNER, Robert F. (Dubuque, IA, Aug. 13, 1918--Dubuque, IA, Mar. 25, 2013). For several years, Neuwoehner played piano professionally with midwestern dance bands, including that of Lawrence Welk, before returning to Dubuque. His career began when he joined the Dubuque Container Corporation in 1939 as a scrap paper baler. From 1944 to 1946 he served his country on the USS Petroff Bay as an Electronics Technician's Mate in the Navy. He returned to Dubuque and the paper business. After his company was acquired by St. Regis Paper Co. in 1955, Neuwoehner rose from salesperson to sales manager, regional sales manager, and regional director of sales & marketing. His career took him from Dubuque to Dallas, Texas and Chicago, Illinois before returning to Dubuque to assume the role of general manager in 1978.
Neuwoehner retired from St. Regis in 1984 and immediately transitioned to his second career as Senior Vice President of Business Development at DUBUQUE BANK AND TRUST COMPANY. In 1986 he was awarded the American Bankers' Association Presidential Citation for his contributions to the bank. (1) In 1992 he retired again and entered commercial real estate in sales alongside his son, Bob, at American Realty. He received the Realtor of the Year Award in 1999.
Neuwoehner compiled a distinguished career of service to Dubuque. He served on the boards of the DUBUQUE VISITING NURSE ASSOCIATION, BOY SCOUTS, JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TRI-STATES INC., and the DUBUQUE BUSINESS HALL OF FAME. He co-chaired the Dubuque capital appeal for LORAS COLLEGE with a goal of $10 million and later served on the project's steering committee. Neuwoehner served as president of the GREATER DUBUQUE DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION.
Outside of Dubuque, he was a member on the National Defense Executive Reserve, a group of over 1,200 business executives available to the federal government in time of emergency. He was also a member of the influential Iowa Association of Business and Industry.
