MOLO, Bart L.
MOLO, Bart L. (Dubuque, IA, Nov. 26, 1885--Dec., 1948). In 1918, Molo and his brother, Harold, founded MOLO SAND AND GRAVEL COMPANY.
Molo's interest in horses was brought to the public in 1937 with the opening of SILVER ACRES. In addition to enjoying the company of others who appreciated horses, Molo hopes to rekindle Dubuque's recognition as a center of harness racing. (1) While he personally had eleven horses, he stabled horses belonging to Mr. and Mrs. John Taylor ADAMS, the manager of the WITWER GROCERY COMPANY branch, and those belonging to the president of the North City Investment Corporation. The principal attraction of the site, however, was the quarter-mile track. The entire thirty-foot feet wide track could be seen from the top of a small hill located at the center. (2)Molo received widespread Midwestern fame beginning in 1938 for hosting an annual horse show and race. Held at SILVER ACRES, his farm, the show boasted of being the only major horse show in America staged free of charge. All concessions were donated to the American Legion. The attendance in July 1940 exceeded twenty thousand.
Molo also allowed his farm to be used by the 4-H. In 1948 the 11th Annual 4-H Achievement Show features at least 75 baby beeves, 50 dairy cows and 200 head of hogs. (3)
