MCGOVERN, Melvin P. (Dubuque, IA-- ). In 1962 McGovern was the director of the educational development program for the Army's 1st Corps Group stationed in Korea. An estimated 25% of the troops attend classes. Students ranged from those taking grade school work to those acquiring college degrees. (1)

In 1962 McGovern wrote Specimen Pages of Korean Movable Types, a book about Korean printing which used movable type half a century before Guttenberg, the German usually credited with the invention. He was also working on another book, largely pictorial, on Korean folk art. (2) McGovern was the subject of a book by Willa J. Tanabe entitled First Impressions : Japanese Prints of Foreigners from the Melvin P. McGovern Collection. (3)
