MCEVOY, John W. (Dubuque, IA, July 18, 1864--Dubuque, IA, May 26, 1937). Educated at the Cathedral parochial school, Murphy pursued a career as a general contractor being associated with his brother, Edward. They were responsible for the construction of ST. COLUMBKILLE CATHOLIC CHURCH, parish church at the Monastery, plant building on White Street from 7th to 8th for FARLEY AND LOETSCHER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, plant used by METZ MANUFACTURING COMPANY, and the Ernsdorf building at Jones and Main among many others.

McEvoy served as chairman of the Dubuque draft board during WORLD WAR I and attended the departure of every group for military training camps. He served two terms as an alderman from the First Ward and was a member of the first city park committee that preceded the park board. McEvoy also served on the first bathing beach commission and was a director of the CARNEGIE-STOUT PUBLIC LIBRARY, DUBUQUE BUILDING AND LOAN ASSOCIATION and the DUBUQUE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. For four years, he was the treasurer of the American Red Cross and filled the position of acting postmaster for two years.

McEvoy was appointed superintendent of the Water Department in 1919 and served until April 1, 1937. His term was noted for many improvements made in the department and its unusually strong financial position.
