MCCLOSKEY, Robert J.
MCCLOSKEY, Robert J. (Dubuque, IA, Dec. 26, 1902--Dubuque, IA, Oct. 12, 1998). A graduate of COLUMBIA COLLEGE, McCloskey then graduated from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1929.
He was the author of many articles dealing with dentistry and was described by two of the deans of the dental school as a pioneer in the research of the three-quarter and full-cast crown and gold inlay preparations. He was acknowledged by the American Dental Association as the originator of both procedures which have been taught around the world.
Upon retirement, Dr. McCloskey devoted his time to research and was often published in the Iowa Dental Journal. His studies into the protective role of fluorides led to an article in the Journal of the American Dental Association which reported his development of the only known technique for permanent removal of fluorosis stains from tooth enamel.
Sports were an important part of his life. In 1922 he was the Dubuque tennis champion in doubles and singles. While at the University of Iowa, he was also a champion tennis player. In 1940 McCloskey was the player-manager of the Elks Fast Pitch Softball Team which twice won the city championship. He was a member of the DUBUQUE BOWLING ASSOCIATION HALL OF FAME.
