MARKLE, John W. (Virginia, 1815--Dubuque, IA, Feb. 27, 1891). Markle arrived in Dubuque in 1833 and began mining with Peter LORIMIER. He then entered the merchandising business with a Mr. Hammond and later a Mr. Mattox. For the last twenty years of his life, he was the senior member of the firm of MARKLE, COONEY & CO..

In 1857-1859 Markle was a member of a group from Dubuque who traveled to Colorado during the gold rush. In 1862 he enlisted in the Union Army as a member of the GREYBEARD REGIMENT. He earned his title of "captain" for his service in the steamboat business in the 1850s.
