KUEHLE, Carl F. (Dubuque, IA, Apr. 7, 1861--Unknown). Kuehle attended the public schools until the age of ten when his family moved to Waterloo. He graduated from high school there as the valedictorian and enrolled at the University of Iowa. During his undergraduate years, he won many awards such as "the best student of Shakespeare" and oratorical contests. He graduated from the law school in June, 1882.

Kuehl moved to Denison where he found employment in the firm of Connor & Shaw. When Connor became a district judge, Kuehl joined the former partner in creating Shaw & Kuehl. In 1887 the firm established a branch office in Charter Oak, Iowa. Shaw eventually became the governor of Iowa.

In 1888, Kuehl became the vice-president of the Bank of Manilla in Manilla, Iowa. The Bank of Denison was established by the firm of Shaw & Kuehl on January 1, 1890. Shaw served as the president. Kuehle was vice-president.

Kuehle was interested in politics. He served as the chairman of the Crawford County Republican County Committee; president of the 10th District Republican League, chairman of the senatorial committee of his district, and vice-president of the Republican National League for the State of Iowa in 1893-1894. He was a state delegate to the convention in 1897 that nominated Shaw for governor.

Active in social organizations, Kuehle was the Supreme Representative from the Grand Lodge of Iowa to the Supreme Lodge of the World for the Knights of Pythias. He served as president of the alumni association for the University of Iowa and was a founder and member of the board of directors of the Denison Normal School Association.
