KRUSE, Leonard
Kruse, Leonard Robert "Len" (Dubuque, IA, Dec. 21, 1921--Dubuque, IA, June 21, 1999). A fourth generation member of a Dubuque family, Kruse was a 1939 graduate of DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL. Returning from WORLD WAR II, Kruse worked for the U.S. Postal Service, Dubuque office, for nearly 40 years. He retired in 1984 after serving as director of administration during the last 17 years.
World War II Victory Medal]].Kruse was appointed to the U.S. Civil Service Commission, Washington, D.C., in August 1961, with his designated area the 9th U.S. Civil Service Region from St. Louis. He served on the board of the U.S. Civil Service Examiners for 20 years. He also served on the advisory board of the CENTER FOR DUBUQUE HISTORY at LORAS COLLEGE, the Dubuque Postal Service Advisory Council and was a charter member of the Friends of Wahlert Memorial Library at Loras College. He led the successful effort making Dubuque the "First Day of Issue" for Iowa's Sesquicentennial postage stamp on Aug. 1, 1996.
Kruse was a member of the WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH; National Radio Club since 1939; Iowa Postal History Society; State Historical Society of Iowa; DUBUQUE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY; and the National Association of Postal Supervisors. He served as an officer of the Dubuque Postal Employees Credit Union and was an officer of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He received his 50 plus years membership with the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque.
Kruse became a freelance writer of local history in his retirement years. He was the author of Unforgettable Radio, Dubuque Post Office Celebrates 150 Years of Service, My Old Dubuque, and The Frederick D. Kruse Family. He wrote more than a one hundred articles in Dubuque Folklore II, Julien's Journal, "Telegraph Herald," "Over 49 News & Views," "Port of Dubuque Visitor," "Riverland," and "LaPosta: A Journal of American Postal History."
