KAMMER, John "Doc"
KAMMER, John "Doc" (Bern, Switzerland--Dubuque, IA, Sept. 1, 1985). In 1929 Kammer came to Dubuque to be the trainer of the Dubuque Tigers professional baseball team. It was during a game when Kammer was rushing into the infield to help an injured player that his medicine bag popped open spilling supplies on the field. His nickname of "Doc" began. (1)
In 1930 Kammer joined the staff of LORAS COLLEGE where he held the position of athletic trainer for forty-one years. (2) In 1957 he was one of eight men awarded 25-year merit awards by the National Athletic Trainers Association. In 1969 he was the person of honor at a "Doc Kammer Night" during a basketball game and was honored again with a special day on the campus in 1971. A member of the Quarter Century Club, Kammer was a charter member of the Loras Athletic Hall of Fame. (3)
