IRISH CATHOLIC COLONIZATION SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES. In 1879 Bishop John HENNESSY was invited by Bishop John L. Spaulding of Peoria to attend the organizational meeting of this group in Chicago. The organization hoped to attract Irish immigrants who were living in poverty in eastern cities to the open farmlands of the Midwest.
While such an opportunity would have allowed Bishop Hennessy to extend his influence and would have been in keeping with other efforts to attract Catholic immigration (See: ARCHDIOCESE OF DUBUQUE )to the Midwest, he neither acknowledged the invitation nor attended the meeting.
