HUGHLETT, Samuel
HUGHLETT, Samuel. (Davidson County, TN, Feb. 18, 1808--Galena, IL, Jan. 2, 1864) Hughlett, his father, and brothers came to Galena in November, 1831. He was stationed in a fort at Elizabeth, Illinois during the BLACK HAWK WAR and later settled there. He served a term as deputy sheriff. Upon the death of his father who had a large number of slaves, Hughlett moved briefly to Galena where he gave slave their freedom. (1)
Hughlett moved to Dubuque in 1835 or 1836 and began smelting LEAD for Richard Waller.
Hughlett returned to Galena in 1837 and purchased half interest in the furnace of R. W. Brush. Brush later sold his interest to two others until 1854 when Hughlett purchased the interest of his partners. The business became S. Hughlett & Co. and in 1861 he brought in his son Thomas as a partner. (2)
