HOWARD JOHNSON INC. Howard Johnson's, or Howard Johnson, is a chain of hotels, motels and restaurants located primarily throughout the United States and Canada. Founded by Howard Johnson, it was the largest restaurant chain in the U.S. throughout the 1960s and 1970s, with more than 1,000 combined company owned and franchised outlets.

In 2015, Howard Johnson hotels and motels were part of Wyndham Worldwide.

Howard Johnson's restaurants were franchised separately from the hotel brand beginning in 1986. In 2015 the food and beverage rights to the restaurant were owned by Wyndham Worldwide. Only two HoJo restaurants remained as of March 31, 2015: one in Lake George, New York and one in Bangor, Maine. The line of branded supermarket frozen foods, including ice cream, is no longer manufactured. (1)

In March 1960 negotiations for a $750,000 motor lodge and restaurant had been completed according to Frank Kelly of Dodge Properties, Inc. The business operated under a franchise of Howard Johnson Inc. would be located at 1075 Dodge. The motor lodge would be constructed on an upper level while the gate lodge and restaurant would be on a lower level. The goal was to offer 120 units with 60 units in the initial project.
