HOLY SPIRIT PARISH. Declining revenue and membership in 2011 forced three north end parishes to merge. Holy Ghost Parish founded in 1896, Holy Trinity Parish established in 1920 and Sacred Heart Parish founded in 1879 merged to form Holy Spirit Parish. Sacred Heart was an offshoot of St. Mary Parish that closed in 2010. Holy Ghost and Holy Trinity were also founded to serve the German families in the area.

All three churches were considered to be in excellent condition and were intended to remain open as “worship sites” of the new parish with the same Mass schedule as before the merger. The parishes took the first step in 2007 when they consolidated services and staff and formed Holy Spirit Pastorate. The consolidation led to a negotiated reduction of $100,000 owed to Dubuque’s Catholic school system. Buildings for sale at Holy Trinity and Sacred Heart would also provide money for the new parish.
