HODGE & WHITELAW. The 1870-1871 and 1873-74 Dubuque City Directory located this business on the east side of Clay between 8th and 9th. It was announced in August of 1873 that the company was selling its steam engine having chosen to adopt power from the waterworks at a savings of $100 annually. (1)

The 1874-1875 Dubuque City Directory stated that this business was located on 876 Clay.

This firm became the AMERICAN SMELTING COMPANY prior to 1880.
