Hird, Albert. (Dubuque, IA, Oct. 16, 1890--Dubuque, IA, Aug. 15, 1950). Hird, one of the leading "crosshanded" golfers in the area, was known for his medium length but accurate driving. The BUNKER HILL GOLF COURSE champion in 1944 and runner-up in 1949, Hird was consistently ranked among the top of the low handicap players and was an active member of the golf committee. Hird's golf clubs were widely recognized by his habit of wrapping the shafts with fine-grained emery paper to provide a non-slip grip in all types of weather.
