HEARTLAND AIRMED
HEARTLAND AIRMED. In 1996 Heartland AirMed, a service of Heartland Regional Paramedic Services of Dubuque and Trans North Aviation of Eagle River, Wisconsin, announced it would be able to transport patients in and out of Dubuque at the start of the new year. Three nurses from FINLEY HOSPITAL (THE) completed training to accompany these patients. The announcement meant that the first fixed-wing air ambulance service in Iowa was to be offered in Dubuque.
The ambulance service would provide patients an option in graveling long distances. Heartland AirMed would offer both national and international air transportation. Officials of the company explained that the service did not compete with helicopters which generally transported patients less than 150 miles and deliver them directly to the hospital. Fixed-wing planes were used for patients who had to be more stable. After arrival at airports, patients were transferred to other transportation.
