HANTELMANN, Richard J. (Iowa City, IA, Sept. 5, 1932--Dubuque, IA, May 16, 2011). Hantelmann graduated from LORAS ACADEMY in 1952 and served in the Army during the KOREAN CONFLICT.

In 1959 Hantelmann graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in New Haven, Connecticut. He then worked in Provincetown, Massachusetts and Rockford, Illinois before returning to Dubuque to manage the DUBUQUE SHOOTING SOCIETY kitchen. Dick and his brothers purchased DIAMOND'S CAFETERIA AND GRILLE in 1965 and opened The Brothers III downstairs.

Hantelmann returned to school to earn his teaching degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in 1971. He then taught for fifteen years at the Southwest Wisconsin Vocational Technical Institute.

Hantelmann was a charter member of the Dubuque Evening Lions Club, member of the American Legion Dubuque Post 6, founding member of the Tri-State Chapter of the American Culinary Federation, and a supporter of the HONOR FLIGHT DUBUQUE. He sang with the MUSIC MEN BARBERSHOP CHORUS (THE) and the DUBUQUE CHORALE. A racquetball enthusiast and a great local player from 1969 to 1991, Hantelmann was named a city champion for two or three years. The Brothers III sponsored many softball and volleyball teams in the early 1960s and 1970s.
