GREAT BOOKS
GREAT BOOKS. Originally part of the curriculum of St. John's College and the University of Chicago, the Great Books program was adapted in the 1930s to an adult study course. By 1950 it was sponsored nationally by the Great Books Foundation.
In January 1952 forty people enrolled for the first study of selected classics. Meeting at Central School, the class voted to rotate leadership of its meetings which were held every other Thursday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. (1)
In 1966 the Dubuque Adult Great Books group sponsored for the second year a Junior Great Books program. The Junior Great Books program began in 1965 with fifth graders at LINCOLN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL and spread to other schools in the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT. (2)
