ELLWANGER, Andrew. (Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, Nov. 30, 1842--Dubuque, IA, Sept. 7, 1901). Andrew was only ten when his parents brought him to the United States. From 1860 through 1869 he worked for George Brogan learning the harness-making trade.

In 1869 with his brother Otto, Ellwanger opened his business at 1256 Clay under the name ELLWANGER BROS. Otto remained in the business after the death of his brother.
