DUBUQUE LARD-OIL, SOAP, AND CANDLE FACTORY. The soap making company of F. M. PLEINS & CO. began business in 1850 in a small wooden building at the corner of Dodge and Locust. When Jesse P. FARLEY bought into the business it was renamed the Dubuque Lard-Oil, Soap and Candle Factory on October 22, 1855. (1)

James BEACH joined the firm by purchasing the interest owned by Farley. (2) This company was then renamed PLEINS & BEACH.
