DUBUQUE INDEPENDENT. The Dubuque Independent was established as a weekly newspaper and its first copy was issued on May 21, 1881. In 1887 the Dubuque Independent Company was organized for the purpose of continuing its publication. On September 1st this company also began the publication of a daily evening edition.

The weekly Independent had six-columns, while the daily was four-columns. Both were independent politically. The price of the weekly was $l.00 annually; the daily cost one cent per copy.
