DUBUQUE BREWERY
DUBUQUE BREWERY. The Dubuque Brewery was established in 1846 by Mathias TSCHIRGI and Anton Gehrig at 2125 Couler Avenue. Gehrig died before the brewery was finished and Tschirgi wrote to his friend Anton HEEB asking that he come to Dubuque to help operate the business. Heeb, a businessman in St. Louis, was married to Gehrig's oldest daughter. As soon as Heeb arrived, Tschirgi left for St. Paul, Minnesota to start another brewery. The Dubuque Brewery then became the A. HEEB BREWING COMPANY. (1)
The first beer produced by the company was at a time when the plant's capacity was six barrels per day. Building expansion occurred in 1856 and 1860. The brewery was described as being constructed of brick, three stories high and 90' by 40'. The malt house was four stories high and 100' by 40'. The office was constructed of red brick and was 90' by 65'. By 1860 the company was producing 700 barrels of beer every twenty-five days. (2)
In 1892 the company merged with Glab Brothers (Northern Brewing Company), Schmid Brothers (Iowa Brewery), and the Western Brewing Company and became part of the DUBUQUE BREWING AND MALTING COMPANY. (3)
The 1858-1859 and 1868-69 Dubuque City Directory listed this at the corner of Couler Avenue and Eagle Point Avenue.
