DUBUQUE'S HERITAGE: LIFE IN OUR OWN BACKYARD
DUBUQUE'S HERITAGE: LIFE IN OUR OWN BACKYARD. The first organized unit on Dubuque history ever developed in the schools of Dubuque, "Dubuque's Heritage" was first suggested by Michael D. GIBSON. In 2000 using a $10,000 grant from the DUBUQUE RACING ASSOCIATION and funding from LORAS COLLEGE, a kit was developed by local educators for use in the city's third grade classrooms.
Included in the kit were a study unit on Dubuque history; a copy of Dubuque, the Encyclopedia; a copy of Faith and Fortunes, an Encyclopedia of Dubuque County; a CD-Rom of music by local composers, and copies of historical pictures. Themes of the unit included: Dubuque's Cultural Heritage, Business and Industry, Historic Landmarks, and Buildings and Transportation. Each topic was planned to take from four to seven days. Copies of the kit were also sent to area libraries and colleges.
