DANK (Deutsch-Amerikanischer National Kongress)
DANK (Deutsch-Amerikanischer National Kongress). DANK was aChicago-based organization dedicated to the preservation of German customs and heritage in the United States. Also known as the German-American National Congress, DANK was founded in 1958 to encourage reunification of Germany, opposition to anti-German propaganda, friendship between America and Germany, and preservation and cultivation of German customs and language.
The first meeting of the local DANK chapter in Dubuque was held February 13, 1977. The organization's first social event was a dance held at Riverside Bowl in April 1977. Membership in the organization grew from fifty-three at the February meeting to an estimated one hundred ten in May 1977.
