ROLLER DERBY. Roller Derby is an American-invented contact sport. The history can be traced to 1884 endurance contests with the first use of the term "derby" coming in 1922. The sport involves skating around an oval track. Points are scored as two individual players ("jammers") lap members of their opposing teams while both teams play offense and defense simultaneously. Contemporary roller derby is international and mainly female with over five hundred women's leagues in sixteen countries.
