CUMULUS MEDIA
CUMULUS MEDIA. Around 2015 with approximately 525 stations in 110 cities, Cumulus was the largest pure-play radio company in the United States and one of the nation’s top providers of local marketing solutions. (1) An article in the November 12, 1997 Telegraph Herald, stated that Cumulus Media was formed as a limited liability company in 1996 by Quaestus Management Corporation of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Cumulus was established "to acquire and operate multi-market radio broadcast networks incorporating new media technologies to enhance programming, increase productivity and achieve economies of scale in a multi-station multi-market environment." Cumulus was co-managed by Stratford Research of Atlanta, George and had offices in Milwaukee and Chicago. In 1997 Cumulus owned 38 stations in the United States. (2) It took advantage of the Federal Communications Act of 1996 that removed a national limit and made it easier to acquire multiple stations in one market. (3)
In Dubuque, the company in 2013 operated 103 WJOD, Y105, Eagle 102, Q107.5 and NewsTalk 1490 WDBQ-AM. (4)
On August 30, 2013, a deal was announced in which Cumulus Media would swap its stations in Dubuque and Poughkeepsie, New York to Townsquare Media in exchange for Peak Broadcasting's Fresno, California stations. The deal was part of Cumulus' acquisition of Dial Global; Townsquare, Peak, and Dial Global were all controlled by Oaktree Capital Management. (5)
In 2013 the company was located at 5490 Saratoga Road.
