CRAFTSMAN STYLE ARCHITECTURE. Craftsman style homes dominated residential architecture in the early 20th Century. They remain among the most desired designs for those who desire quality detail in a home. While often smaller than other contemporary designs, Craftsman floor plans are said make up in livability what they lack in square footage.

The Craftsman style originated in California, inspired by the work of brothers Greene and Greene, who modified BUNGALOW ARCHITECTURE by incorporating influences from the English Arts and Crafts movement and Asian building techniques.

Characteristics include low-slung roofs supported by exposed rafters and stone piers. Interior details include built-in shelving, cabinetry with abundant use of wood carved in geometric patterns inspired by the natural environment. Craftsman house plans are unpretentious and understated.
