CONTINENTAL HOTEL. The building was constructed in 1854 or 1855 as a hotel called the "Temperance."

The 1868 Guide, Gazetteer and Directory of the Dubuque & Soux (sic) City Railroad through 1870-1871 Dubuque City Directory gave the address of this business as the southwest corner of 4th and Main.

The 1873-74 Dubuque City Directory listed the address as 4th and Iowa. In 1874 the hotel had been renamed the NEW YORK HOUSE and was managed by H. Kolb. (1) There was apparently another hotel by the same name on White.

In 1876 the hotel was purchased by A. H. Peaslee and Mr. Conygham and converted into the PEASLEE & COMPANY brewery. (2)

In 1894 Edward C. Peaslee announced that the building would be demolished in preparation for the construction of a modern brewery. (3)
