CONLON, Orlin J.
CONLON, Orlin J. (Cuby City, WI--Dubuque, IA, Dec. 12, 1985). The president of CONLON CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, Orlin Conlon was a member of the Master Buildings of Iowa of which he was elected secretary in 1946. (1) He was also a member of the Associated General Contractors of America. Among the projects with which he was involved was the construction of the new FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF DUBUQUE at Locust and 7th in 1962. (2)
In 1939 Conlon was one of five men who prevented the possible derailment and wreck of a fast ILLINOIS CENTRAL RAILROAD train near Manchester, Iowa. The men were honored at a luncheon and presented with specially designed medals. (3) Conlon's civic duties included his appointment in 1940 to the Dubuque Advisory Council for Dubuque hospitals participating in the Hospital Service, Inc., Iowa's non-profit plan of providing hospital service on a prepayment basis. (4) In 1960 he was the president of the United Cerebral Palsy of Dubuque when the organization received its charter from the UCP of Iowa. (5) He was elected chairman of "People", a group in 1978 which sought alternatives to approved local highway improvements and especially the proposed freeway 561 from Kerrigan Road to a new CITY ISLAND bridge. (6) Conlon was a member of the President's Club of the UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE, Loras Club of Dubuque, CLARKE COLLEGE Development Council, and the United States Industrial Council.
