CARLISLE, John B. (Durand, WI- ). Founder, CARLISLE COMMUNICATIONS. The company founded by Carlisle provides pre-press needs of publishers across the United States. Upon moving to Dubuque in 1955, Carlisle was employed at Hoermann Press, now Union Hoermann Press, and the WILLIAM C. BROWN COMPANY where he supervised the production division.

In 1978 Carlisle purchased YOUNKERS ENGRAVING COMPANY located on Central Avenue. The company, now located in one of Dubuque's INDUSTRIAL PARKS, has grown from a staff of three including the owner to approximately one hundred with additional employees working at their homes doing microcomputer typesetting. The "work at home concept," a Carlisle invention while he worked at William C. Brown, is now widely used in the industry.
