CAIN, Absalom. (Virginia, Aug. 28, 1813--Dubuque, IA, Feb. 29, 1884). Cain grew up in Shenandoah, Virginia and learned the trade of shoemaker. He came to Ohio and lived there until coming to Dubuque on December 13, 1840. He was engaged in some MINING and worked at his trade of shoemaker for one year.
Cain entered the mercantile business with Henry Simplot until the death of the latter in 1846. Cain then carried on the business with John Simplot until 1852. In 1852 Cain was appointed Deputy Clerk of the District Court and then was clerk for the County Judge until 1866 before he retired.
