BROWN, John J.
BROWN, John J. (Amboy, IL, May 25, 1883--Dubuque,IA, June 20, 1951). Brown served fourteen years as secretary-treasurer of the Iowa Federation of Labor. He was also a member of the board of directors of the federation for twelve years and a member of the state federation for twenty-six years.
Employed as a pressman for the TELEGRAPH HERALD and then the Dubuque Times-Journal, Brown became the union secretary and treasurer when the Dubuque Printing Pressmen's and Assistants' Union was organized in 1914. He served in that position until his death. After twenty-seven years, Brown retired as a pressman and served briefly as a U.S. deputy marshal for northeastern Iowa.
