BELL, Janice
BELL, Janice. (near Vail, Carroll County, IA, Mar. 30, 1953--Dubuque, IA, May 28, 2005). Janice graduated from AR-WE-VA High School, class of 1971, in Westside, Iowa, and Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She married Dave Bell on December 5, 1987, in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. (1) For decades, Bell operated Jan’s Sewtique, a full-service custom tailoring shop for men’s and women’s clothing. Her business was located at 1042 Main St. for 25 years. The business moved in 2004 to 1005 Main St. with its final location at 860 White St., in Dubuque’s Millwork District, where it moved in 2006. (2)
Among many, Bell was also recognized as one of the area's finest equestrians. She was a champion many times on Roany, her husband's horse, and more recently on "Flaming Hot Money," known to all as “Tamale.” Her final ride over Memorial Day weekend at the “Go For Broke” and “Boots, Bits, and Spurs Invitational” events was one of her best—she clocked some of her top times. (3) She originally excelled in Western pleasure, a competition at horse shows that showcases the animal’s manners, responsiveness and gaits. A house filled with trophies attested to her success. (4)
