A & W RESTAURANT. In 2017 A&W was 98 years old, easily predating fast-food giants like McDonald’s and Wendy’s — but the height of its popularity was around a half-century ago. It was one of the first companies to introduce car hop service, where servers (often women) would take orders and deliver food to cars. By the 1960s, the company developed a status as something of a roadside attraction, with burger-toting fiberglass sculptures.
In the 1960s, the company had some 2,400 locations, a number that fell to 967, one-third of which are overseas (not counting Canada). In 2017 the root beer-and-burger chain planned to open 45 restaurants in total, up from 36 in 2016.
The 1977 and 1980 Dubuque City Directory listed 2260 John F. Kennedy Road.
