ATHERTON, WALKER & CO. The 1870-1871 Dubuque City Directory stated that this business could be found on the east side of Iowa between 2nd and 3rd.

The factory was destroyed by fire on July 22, 1879. (1) Reconstruction began immediately and the business was scheduled to reopen at the end of September, 1879. (2)

On November 10, 1879 the entire workforce of a Mr. Plopp left his establishment and found work immediately with Atherton. The Dubuque Herald writer surmised that a pay issue was the problem. (3)
