ARKELL SAFETY BAG COMPANY. In January, 1944 the Arkell Safety Bag Company officials announced the firm had leased the former recreation building in the Brunswick Block for their plant. Machinery for the production of crinkle paper containers and wrappings was to begin soon. The containers were used for protection from weather and transportation of food products. Among companies already using these products were the DUBUQUE PACKING COMPANY and the IOWA EGG PRODUCTS COMPANY. Most of the output of the new company would be used for shipping food purchased by the government.

All the employees were to be hired in Dubuque and sixty people were expected to be at work by February.
