APEL, Rob. (Dubuque, IA-- ). A graduate of LORAS COLLEGE in 1972, Apel took a job as an assistant with the DUBUQUE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE until 1977 during the time F.I.S.T. was filmed in the city. (1) He later served as the director of the Sterling, Illinois Chamber of Commerce from 1977-1979. He was an aide to Iowa Congressman Thomas TAUKE from 1979 to 1983 before being chosen to be the chief executive officer of the DUBUQUE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
He held that position from 1983 at a time of tremendous financial recession in the community to 1988. During his tenure the Convention and Visitors' Bureau was created and DUBUQUE GREYHOUND PARK AND CASINO opened for business. He became vice-president of sales for ADVANCED DATA-COMM. INC. in 1988 and remained there until 2003 when he was the market president for LIBERTY BANK in Dubuque. (2)
Apel's commitment to the city in which he lived extended to civic organizations. He was working with MYERS-COX COMPANY in 2011 when he served on an East Dubuque, Illinois looking for places to move the city hall. (3) In 2012 he was a member of the Public Relations Committee for the United Way of Dubuque Area Tri-States. (4) He was also elected to a three-year term on the organization's board of directors. (5)
