AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR. Although it is generally thought that territory that later became Iowa lay outside the field of combat in the Revolutionary War, English military were intently interested in controlling the MISSISSIPPI RIVER. It was after their capture of the mining camp at Dubuque, that Jean Marie CARDINAL made his epic voyage to St. Louis to warn the inhabitants. His actions enabled the residents to defeat the British, and thus prevent the Mississippi River from falling into British control.
