A.F.S. STUDENT (FIRST)
A.F.S. STUDENT (FIRST). In 1958 Ankie Huysman, a female high school student, became the first American Field Service exchange student to come to Dubuque. She attended DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL and stayed during her senior year with the King HERR family.
In 1963 she returned to Dubuque to visit the Herr family. She was chaperoning Dutch students coming to the United States under the A.F.S. program and after returning to the Netherlands would be working with 65 U.S. students who were spending the summer or a full year in her native country. A graduate of the College of Physical Education and Therapy in the Netherlands, she worked as a physical therapist in a children's rehabilitation center in Delft. She was also active in the national committee for the A.F.S. in the Netherlands and helped place American students in Dutch homes.
