"VOLLEYBALL CAPITAL OF IOWA"
"VOLLEYBALL CAPITAL OF IOWA." In 1974 the State of Iowa was still a novice in the just certified high school sport of volleyball. Dubuque, however, that year sent both Dubuque Wahlert Golden Eagles and Dubuque Senior Rams to Des Moines to compete for the state title at the fifth state volleyball tournament. The Rams had won the state title the previous year. In 1974 the Golden Eagles beat the Rams for their state title. That win laid the claim to the nickname for Dubuque.
On November 15, 2003 the "capital city of volleyball" claimed another first as Wahlert athletes won the Iowa Class 3A Championship beating West Delaware 3-0 while the Hempstead Mustangs won the Iowa Class 4A Championship and its first state crown since 1975 beating Ankeny 3-2. With this accomplishment, Dubuque became the first town in Iowa girls prep history to produce state champions in the same sport in the same year.
