"SABBATH BREAKING" ORDINANCE
"SABBATH BREAKING" ORDINANCE. Passed by city officials in 1837, the ordinance outlawed "shooting, horse racing, cock fighting, or frequenting tipling houses, groceries, or other disorderly houses" on Sundays and banned "fidling, fluting or other performances on any musical instrument in any such grocery or tavern." There was a $10 fine for each offense.
