GLAB, John. (Guegesheim, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, Nov. 11, 1834-Dubuque, IA, Oct. 7, 1922). MAYOR. Glab migrated to the United States as a child with his family and settled on a farm in Dubuque County. As an adult, he freighted wood on the MISSISSIPPI RIVER until 1865 when he bought and operated a distillery and a flourmill. (1) The 1868-69 Duubuque City Directory listed the mill at the northeast corner of 9th and Pine.

By 1875 Glab was involved in the manufacture of pickles and vinegar. His business, the MISSISSIPPI VALLEY VINEGAR, MUSTARD, AND PICKLING WORKS, was continued for thirty-six years and the same site as the former flour mill. He also built and operated the GLAB HOUSE, a noted hotel of its day. (1)

Glab held the position of alderman during 1883 and 1884 and served as the mayor of Dubuque in 1885 and 1886. He also served sixteen years as justice of the peace and police magistrate. (1) His brother was Adam GLAB.
