GLAB, John
GLAB, John. (Guegesheim, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, Nov. 11, 1834-Dubuque, IA, Oct. 7, 1922). MAYOR. Glab held the position of alderman during 1883 and 1884 and served as the mayor of Dubuque in 1885 and 1886. He served sixteen years as justice of the peace and police magistrate.
Glab migrated to the United States as a child with his family and settled on a farm in Dubuque County. As an adult, he freighted wood on the MISSISSIPPI RIVER until 1865 when he bought and briefly operated a distillery and a flourmill. By 1870 Glab was involved in the manufacture of pickles and vinegar, a business he continued for thirty-six years. He also built and operated the Glab House, a noted hotel of its day.
