BUTT BROS. Established in 1852 by John Butt, Sr., the company was located at 645 Iowa Street. The firm manufactured wagons and a general stock of light-running vehicles.

When the company founder died in 1873, he was succeeded by his sons--John, Ernest, William and Helmuth Butt. They had a three-story brick building constructed at a cost of $3,500. The company had seven workmen earning a weekly payroll of $100. The annual income of the company in 1880 was $8,000.

The 1859-1860 through 1868-69 Dubuque City Directory listed Iowa between 6th and 7th.

The 1867 Dubuque City Directory gave no address for this business although it was listed as a blacksmith.

The 1875-1876 through 1929 Dubuque City Directory gave the address as 645 Iowa.
