MYERS, Dorrance Dixon
MYERS, Dorrance Dixon. (Dubuque Co, IA, Nov. 3, 1841-Apr. 16, 1917). In January, 1860, Myers came to Dubuque, and entered the Treasurer's office under William G. STEWART and remained until 1863. In that year he accepted a position in the master mechanic's office of the DUBUQUE AND SIOUX CITY RAILROAD, where he was employed until March, 1867. In April he began in business on his own account as a manufacturer of fine cut, chewing and smoking tobacco, as a member of the firm of Amrington, Myers & Co. In 1867 Myers established and served as president of the Dubuque Tobacco Works, reorganized in 1870 as the MYERS, COX AND COMPANY, a wholesale tobacco business at 322 Main Street.
Myers served as trustee of the MOUNT OLIVET CEMETERY Association, and director of the KEY CITY GAS COMPANY and the Julien House Hotel Company. He was president of the board of education, chairperson of the Dubuque County Democratic Central Committee, president and cashier of the DUBUQUE NATIONAL BANK, stockholder and director of the Cascade Bank of Cascade, Iowa, a director of the German State Bank of Dyersville, Iowa, of the State Bank of Onawa, Iowa, and a stockholder in the Sheldon Bank of Sheldon, Iowa. He was one of the promoters and directors of the HIGH BRIDGE. For two years he served as president of the bridge company. He is also a director of the Dubuque Harness & Saddle Company and the DUBUQUE FIRE AND MARINE INSURANCE COMPANY.
